TVB Actresses Take About 10 Years to Become 'TV Queen'

You can't just win the title "TV Queen" (視后) with only several years of acting experiences. Looking at the past winners, they all spent nearly 10 years in the showbiz before bringing that award home.

Charmaine Sheh - 10 years
Charmaine is the 1997 Miss Hong Kong 2nd runner-up. Her acting was criticized when she made her debut to the showbiz. After 9 years of hard work, she was crowned TV Queen with series "Maiden's Vow" in 2006.

Ada Choi - 10 years
Also Miss Hong Kong 2nd runner-up (1989), Ada won "Best Actress" with "Secret of the Heart" in 1998.

Jessica Hsuan - 9 years
Jessica joins TVB in 1991 but it was in 1999 that she finally became TV Queen with series "Detective Investigation Files IV."

Maggie Cheung - 10 years
Although she didn't make into the top 3 in 1994's Miss Hong Kong, but she became TV Queen i 2003 with series "The King of Yesterday and Tomorrow."

Other TV Queens like Gigi Lai and Sheren Tang also took more than 10 years to win "Best Actress," not to mention veteran actresses Louise Lee and Michelle Yim.

TVB Anniversary Feature: Charmaine Sheh

Charmaine Sheh Sze Man (佘詩曼) is definitely one of the most successful TVB "fa-dans" in 2000s.

The actress joined TVB after winning 3rd place in 1997's Miss Hong Kong Pageant. Her first series is Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain (1999). But her acting was criticized in the beginning, especially her "little chicken voice" (squeaky voice).

She then spent half of a year to try to remove the "little chicken voice" and kept improving her acting. Her improvement is notable in many series, such as her first role as the lead in Return of the Cuckoo (2000) where she won that year's "My Favorite TV On-screen Couple" with Julian Cheung, Country Spirit (2001), and War and Beauty (2004).

Not only she can play serious roles, she is actually not bad in comedies. Word Twisters' Adventures (2007) with Jordan Chan, You're Hired (2009) with well-known comedian Dayo Wong, and the recent Can't Buy Me Love (2010), she proved her wide-range performance in different series over these years.

In 2006, her acting is acknowledged as she won TV Queen (Best Actress) with series Maiden's Vow, where she played 4 generations of women in the drama. This year her role as 3 Princess in Can't Buy Me Love once again made her one of the top favorites for TV Queen. Charmaine or Sheren this year?

TVB Anniversary Feature: Evergreen Mak

Evergreen/Makbau Mak Cheung Ching (麥長青) is one of those actors in TVB who spent many years to reach where he stands now.

Joined TVB after losing the 1987's "Super New Star Competition" (超級新星大賽), Makbau (meaning "wheat bread") starred in many series as those non-important roles in the beginning. Then finally getting heavier roles, like the forensic professional in Detective Investigation Files II (1995) and Sha Zeng in TVB's Journey to the West (1996, 1998) [second pic].

But he still could not earn enough to support himself and his family. Once with millions in debt, he finally paid everything back to the bank 2 years ago.

And this year, his long years of work also paid back. Although he has played villains before (like Chiu Kwan Ho in Catch Me Now), but it is until this year in No Regrets, his role as Leung Fei Fan (first pic, a selfish greedy police) made him stand out. "Leung Fei Fan, eat shit lar!," says Wayne Lai in the anniversary series. Yes, everybody hates Fei Fan Gor. And yes, everybody knows Makbu now.

How about a "Best Supporting Actor" nomination in this year's anniversary awards?

TVB Anniversary Feature: Raymond Wong

Raymond Wong Ho Yin (黃浩然) was a movie person for many years. His handsomeness certainly brought him attention and job opportunities. The actor was discovered by director Johnnie To in late 90s and had a smooth film career since then: Needing You, Wu Yen, Love Undercover, Colour of the Truth, etc.

But in fact, his acting was actually not good, as confirmed by his mentor Johnnie To. The film industry was going down at the same time, causing this movie person to have a decline in jobs. Then he decided to focus on the small screen to improve his acting skills and joined TVB in 2007.

He was fortunate to star in supporting roles when he just joined the big family. But in the first few series, he was still restricted to play handsome guys.

However, his role as Wu 2 Siu in Sweetness in the Salt (2009) made a turning point in his TV career---audience, especially the female audience, were very touched by his role [no spoilers from Kay :P].

Within 3 years, he already has a chance to be one of the leads in TVB series, an opportunity many supporting actors have been waiting for a long time. His lead role as Turbo in When Lanes Merge (2010) is praised by the audience. Now he is filming another series as the lead: The Truth (direct translation from 真相).

Besides playing a handsome guy, he has played other types of roles, like a shy guy who would sweat when he gets nervous in A Watchdog's Tale (2009) and a smart murderer in Mysteries of Love (2010), So, is it time for him to get nominated as "Most Vastly Improved Actor" in this year's anniversary awards?

TVB Anniversary Feature: Sheren Tang

(I admire her A LOT.)

Graduated from TVB's 1984 acting class, Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯) is already the lead in her first series. Her youthful girl roles captured the audience's attention immediately.

Several years later, she left Hong Kong to attend an interior design program, and thought of quitting the showbiz.

Then she joined ATV when she came back, and filmed several notable series such as I Have a Date With Spring.

Several years later, she returned to TVB.

This time, she captured the audience with her matured and tough roles.

Yu Fei in War and Beauty (2004), Hilda in La Femme Desperado (2006), Kelly in Your Class Or Mine (2008), etc.

She is always the audience's favorite, but it was not until in 2009 that she is finally the TV Queen, winning "Best Actress" with her role as 4 Nai Nai in Rosy Business.

This year, she returns with anniversary series No Regrets, which is Rosy Business' sequel. Her biggest competitor to win TV Queen again is Charmaine Sheh. So, will she crown the award the second time?

TVB Anniversary Feature: Jessica Hsuan

Believe it or not, Jessica Hester Hsuan (宣萱) has been working for TVB for almost 20 years now.

Discovered by TVB in 1991, the actress rose to fame with her role as Samantha Ching in File of Justice IV (1995). Since then, she has become one of the "fa dans" (TVB A-list actress) in TVB. More of her well-known roles include Michelle in Cold Blood Warm Heart (1996), Siu Fong Fong in Old Time Buddy (1997), Ling Choi Fung in Square Pegs (2002), Ko Hei Man in Just Love (2005), and Carmen in Dicey Business (2006).

She can play different kinds of role: gambler, mad wife, tough woman, etc. She has 3 series out this year: A Pillowcase of Mystery II, Sisters of Pearl, and anniversary series Gun Metal Grey. In Gun Metal Grey, she collaborates with Michael Miu again as his love interest. Another tough woman role she plays, should be easy.

Will she win this year's TV Queen (TVB anniversary awards' Best Actress)? Well, she was 1999's TV Queen, winning the award with series Detective Investigation Files IV [first pic]. No need to win more awards to prove her popularity or secure her place as TVB's "fa dan," her work over these years proved it all already.
